Gary Lineker brutally shuts down Matt Le Tissier with sarcastic tweet on Covid

Gary Lineker has brutally shut down Matt Le Tissier after he asked why the flu wasn't given the same response as Covid-19.

Lockdown might be over, but the threat of coronavirus still exists as the number of new cases continues to rise in the UK over the summer months.

65.3% of the population are fully vaccinated, while 72.5% have received at least one dose as the spread of the virus tries to be curbed.

And Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday pundit Le Tissier has questioned why the flu wasn't dealt with in the same way as Covid as it has a "similar fatality rate".

Gary Lineker responded to Matt Le Tissier's tweet on Covid (BBC)

He said on Twitter : "Why didn’t we ever try this hard to “defeat” flu? It has a similar fatality rate to 'Covid' and actually affects younger people more? Answers on a postcard."

But Match of the Day presenter Lineker was quick to dismiss the former Southampton playmaker's tweet as he pointed out the fact there is a flu vaccine offered to the general public.

He replied: "Yeah Matt, why didn’t someone come up with a flu vaccine?"

The Flu vaccine is available every year on the NHS to protect people at risk of getting seriously ill from the flu.

It is free to people who are aged 50 and over, have certain health conditions, or if you're pregnant or are a frontline healthcare worker.

It's recommended that the best time to receive it is in the autumn or early winter before flu season kicks in.

It's also even more crucial to get the flu jab right now as fewer people will have built up a natural immunity to it during the pandemic.

Research shows individuals are more likely to get seriously ill if they get both viruses at the same time.
