Gary Lineker backs Premier League after Everton and Man City postponement

Gary Lineker has backed the decision to postpone Everton's Premier League game against Man City.

The Toffees were set to host City at Goodison Park tonight, only for the match to be called off late in the afternoon after a Covid-19 outbreak was discovered among the visitors.

City had previously confirmed that Kyle Walker and Gabriel Jesus had tested positive for the virus, which meant they sat out their side's victory over Newcastle United on Boxing Day, but further positive tests have now been discovered.

The Premier League have subsequently accepted Man City's request to postpone the game against Everton due to their bubble being breached..

It is a decision that Lineker appears to agree with.

The Match of the Day host tweeted the news that the game had been called off before revealing that Premier League guidance says that, if 14 players are fit, then the match should go ahead.

Yet, when one of Lineker's followers argued that the correct decision had been made due to the fact that, even if 14 players are currently available to play, the virus still could spread without notice, the former Toffees striker agreed.

He tweeted: "Indeed. Common sense must prevail."

A statement by City confirmed that the club's training ground will have to be shut due to the outbreak.

It said: "With the security of the bubble compromised, there posed a risk that the virus could spread further amongst the squad, the staff and potentially beyond.

"Based on strong medical advice the Premier League, in consultation with both clubs, have decided to postpone the fixture.

"All positive cases involving players and staff will observe a period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK Government protocol on quarantine.

"The first team training ground at City Football Academy will close for an indeterminate period, with the squad and associated bubble undergoing testing before any decision is made for training to resume."
