Gary Lineker and former Notts County owner Alan Hardy clash over Kasper Schmeichel comments

Former Notts County owner Alan Hardy has accused television presenter Gary Lineker of 'Leicester bias" after he defended Kasper Schmeichel's recent comments over whether football is coming home.

The former England striker, 60, tweeted that Schmeichel had an argument in pointing out that England had never actually won the Euros before.

The comments were made ahead of England's crunch Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark at Wembley.

Mr Hardy, who owns the Nottinghamshire Golf & Country Club, replied that Lineker seemed to be backing the Leicester goalkeeper - the club he supports - and the presenter had the wrong idea of what "coming home" meant.

Both eventually agreed that the comments were "a bit of fun", but not before a back and forth took place on social media.

In response to the Kasper Schmeichel clip, Lineker said: "He’s got a point. Nice one"

Mr Hardy then fired back and said: "I think you’re showing some Leicester bias there Gary.

“'Coming home' is reference to football and the tournament “coming home” not the trophy. Therefore, he has no point."

The video, which has sparked a debate on what 'coming home' means and whether Schmeichel - whose father won the Euros with Denmark in 1992 - made his comments in jest or as a jibe.

Gary Lineker replied and added: "Hes just having a bit of fun. Relax"

The debate nearly turned sour after Mr Hardy picked up on Lineker's inaccurate grammar with 'hes' to which he replied: "Maybe save your energy for more important matters than the odd typo. You're better than that... I hope."

In the end, Mr Hardy played down the spat and revealed he will be at Wembley tonight watching on.

He said: "Relax, only a bit of fun. On the down to Wembley, enjoy tonight pal and a 2-0 win."
