Penalty or no penalty? England are waking up without a care in the world at Euro 2020, despite questions marks over their extra-time winner against Denmark.
A first major international final since 1966 awaits for the Three Lions after Harry Kane scored the winner in extra-time, following up a penalty that was initially saved by Kasper Schmeichel, to make it 2-1 to England.
However, it was the decision to award that spot-kick for a Joakim Maehle foul on Raheem Sterling that drew plenty of discussion — not least from Gary Lineker and two other former England players on the BBC Sport panel.
Speaking post-match about the challenge on Manchester City winger Sterling, Lineker said: "It's one of those that VAR wouldn't turn over, but probably if they hadn't given it, they wouldn't have interfered?"
Ex-Tottenham and Newcastle midfielder Jermaine Jenas replied: "I thought it was a penalty. There is a little nibble, there, on his way back from Maehle. I think that was the reason that the referee gave the decision. He was very good, the referee. There's a little bite, just there. It's minimal, granted, but there is contact."
During his post-match analysis, 1990 World Cup semi-finalist Lineker went on to address past decisions that have gone against England over the years — such as the 'Hand of God' and Frank Lampard's ghost goal that was ruled out at the 2010 World Cup.
Alan Shearer, though, was not quite as convinced as his BBC colleagues.
He said: "Once the referee had given it, I don't think they were ever going to over-turn it.
"There's a little touch, but I'm not sure there's enough. It was very soft. I'd be pretty angry if that was given against us."
