Gary Hooper off the mark as ex-Celtic star rescues point for Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus

Gary Hooper is off the mark in Cyprus as he rescued a point for Omonia Nicosia.

The former Celtic striker was snapped up by Neil Lennon on a free transfer, but Hoops hero has since lost his job after also taking one-time Rangers and Hibs star Brandon Barker and Adam Matthews on his Cypriot adventure.

Lennon guided Omonia to domestic silverware last season and with that a place in the Europa League play-off round where he masterminded a stunning win over Gent to land a group stage double-header with Cristiano Ronaldo and his Manchester United team-mates, La Liga outfit Real Sociedad and FC Sheriff. Despite the highs, domestic form wasn't meeting the standard with Omonia deciding to act. They currently sit ninth in the league standings after ten games. Pafos - in top spot - hold a 13 point advantage over Hooper and Co after the weekend draw with Aris Limassol.

Aleksandr Kokorin had handed Limassol the lead six minutes before the break but Hooper - doing what he did so well during his time at Celtic - found the back of the net with 20 minutes to play to earn a share of the spoils.

It was was his first strike for his new club in his fifth appearance. He's yet to start as he continues to build his fitness.

During his time in Glasgow, Hooper netted 82 times in just 138 appearances.

He won two Scottish Premiership titles and two Scottish Cups during his time at the Hoops after joining from Scunthorpe in a deal just shy of £2.5million back in 2010.
