Gary Deegan makes League of Ireland return with Shelbourne

Gary Deegan is back in the League of Ireland after signing for Shelbourne for a second time.

The midfielder, 32, has returned home from Cambridge United having previously played for Coventry City, Hibernian, Northampton Town, Southend United and Shrewsbury Town.

He began his career with Shels before stints with Longford and Galway but made his name at Bohs, winning the double in 2008 under Pat Fenlon and retaining the league a year later.

'Deega' hasn’t played since April and was sidelined in the summer with blood poisoning.

Cambridge boss Colin Calderwood described it at the time as a “serious condition” that required three operations and 10 days in hospital.

Shels boss Ian Morris said: “I’m really pleased - he’s the one that I’ve been keeping an eye on for quite a while.

“He brings a wealth of experience to us with attitude, mentality and ability so I’m delighted to get him in.

“He’ll be a big help and drive standards as well adding to what we have. We’ve got a lot of experience in there and I think he’ll be the final piece of the puzzle.”
