Gary Davies has said taking over from Scott Mills “wasn’t easy at the beginning” as he signed off from hosting duties on the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show.
The broadcaster has been covering the morning slot since Mills was sacked by the corporation in March,
Sara Cox will take over the breakfast show full-time on Monday after fronting the teatime show, 4pm to 7pm, on the station since 2018.
Davies signed off his final show, saying: “I’m not one for big speeches but thank you to the whole breakfast team, you are just the best ever.
“It wasn’t easy at the beginning but we got there.
“I loved every single second being with you in the mornings here on Radio 2.
“Thank you, thank you. We’ll say goodbye for now.”
Mills was sacked by the BBC shortly before it emerged that the Metropolitan Police launched an investigation into the 53-year-old in 2016 over allegations of serious sexual offences involving a boy aged under 16 between 1997 and 2000.
Cox was revealed as the new host of the breakfast show in April.
The BBC said her show will include a new format which will bring listeners’ favourite bits from her teatime programme.
Her first guest will be Hollywood superstar Tom Hanks.
The new breakfast show will be available on BBC Radio 2 from 6.30am on July 6.
