Gary Cully stops Joe Fitzpatrick in first round of Irish title clash

Naas lightweight Gary Cully stopped Joe Fitzpatrick in the first round of their BUI Irish title fight a the Ulster Hall.

Cully dropped Fitpatrick with a huge left early in the round which the Belfast boxer never fully recovered from.

Fitzpatrick made the count but another big left had him stumbling back on the ropes, and a flurry of punches from Cully saw referee David Irving step in to halt the contest at 1 minute 38 seconds of the first round.

Fitzpatrick had been billed as the puncher in this fight, but the tables were turned by Cully who moves onto a perfect record of 10-0.

The defeat is Fitzpatrick's first of his pro career.

"I was prepared for 10 tough rounds," Cully said.

"I thought I would stop Joe late in the fight. We were aware of his power so we were going to be cautious in the opening two or three rounds.

"But the shot came and it landed sweetly. I know I have knockout power in both hands."

Cully added: "We knew Joe might not respect my power and try to come at me. And then we caught him.

"I had a great camp. I trained twice a day, six times a week. This has been my life for 20 years.

"I believe this is my time. I have so much belief in my ability."

Trainer Pete Taylor believes Cully will be a "nightmare" for any lightweight.

"He is 6ft 3' and a southpaw. And he's a lightweight. He is a nightmare for opponents," Taylor said.

"He has got it all. He is technically very gifted and he lives for boxing."
