Gary Cahill hails Roy Hodgson’s ‘incredible appetite for football’ after signing new Crystal Palace contract

Gary Cahill has hailed Roy Hodgson's "crazy" appetite to still be managing after the 72-year-old agreed an extension to his Crystal Palace contract.

The former England manager, who arrived in south London four games into a disastrous start to the 2017-18 season following Frank de Boer's brief spell, will remain at Selhurst Park until the end of next season.

Hodgson is the oldest manager in Premier League history, and has been in management since 1976, when he was appointed manager at Halmstad in Sweden.

"It is incredible the appetite for the game he has got, unbelievable at that age," said Cahill. "It is incredible. He has been in the game for so long, in different countries, leagues and with national teams so there is not much he probably hasn't experienced.

"It is great for the lads that he has signed an extension, it is the stability for the club and players for next season.

"His drive to still be involved and still be hungry to come in every single day is unbelievable, it is crazy, I'm not sure that will be me!"

After a run of poor defeats - which delayed the agreement of Hodgson's new deal - Palace are now all but safe for another season after three consecutive wins and clean sheets.

Palace are currently enjoying their best Premier League season to this point of a campaign, and Cahill has called on his Eagles teammates not to ease off between now and the end of the season, with the carrot of a record points haul (49. set last season) not far from their reach.

"Now we have to look forward to see how high we can finish," said Cahill. "To better last season and better the records set in previous seasons in terms of points tallies. Who knows next season, let's see. Hopefully we go into next season with a fully fit squad and maybe some additions and we'll see where we go.
