Gary Cahill and Wilfried Zaha make team of the season as Crystal Palace target £18.5m defender

The Premier League season is currently on hold, with Crystal Palace having been out of action for almost three weeks.

Yet there has still been plenty of news for Palace fans to follow despite the pause in proceedings across Europe.

With that said, here is all the latest news from around Selhurst Park in the past 24 hours.

The all-time top flight league table

Van Aanholt opens up on Palace move

Patrick van Aanholt has revealed how Sam Allardyce persuaded him to join Palace in January 2017.

Allardyce, who had worked with Van Aanholt at Sunderland, acquired the left-back for an initial £14m as Palace attempted to avoid relegation to the Championship.

And the Dutchman says he did not hesitate when he heard that Allardyce wanted to bring him to south London.

“He called me straight away (after getting the Palace job in December 2016) and said, ‘I need you.’ I said, ‘Sam, I am coming!’ I had a bad time at Sunderland off the pitch,” Van Aanholt told The Athletic.

The former Chelsea man also said that he has a “good relationship” with current manager Roy Hodgson, who recently signed a one-year contract extension at Selhurst Park.

Palace join Italian giants in race for Montiel

Crystal Palace have expressed an interest in River Plate right-back Gonzalo Montiel, according to reports.

Palace did not sign a replacement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka last summer, despite the fact that the Eagles academy graduate was sold to Manchester United for £50m.

Joel Ward remains a steady performer and a loyal servant, but Hodgson will no doubt be keen to boost his right-back options this summer.

Palace have identified Montiel as a potential target, although they are likely to face some stiff competition for his signature.

The River Plate defender has also been linked with Inter, Roma, Valencia and Real Betis, while West Ham are also thought to be keen.

Montiel is available for around £18.5m due to a release clause in his contract with the Argentinian heavyweights.

More recognition for Cahill

Earlier this week, a Reddit user calculated that Gary Cahill had been named in Garth Crooks’ team of the season so far, based on the BBC pundit’s weekly selections.

Sky Sports pundits Joleon Lescott and John Hartson were set a similar task, which involved them picking a team of 2019/20 from players outside the current top six.

And Cahill, who Palace signed from Chelsea on a free transfer last summer, was again selected in the XI.

Wilfried Zaha also earned a spot in the side, meaning no other club in the Premier League had more representatives than Palace.

The Ivory Coast international has not been as productive as he was last term, when he registered 10 goals and five assists in the top flight.

But Zaha remains one of the most dangerous wingers in the division and has knuckled down admirably after failing to seal a transfer away from Selhurst Park last summer.
