Gary Bowles execution: Serial killer who butchered six gay men is put to death

A serial killer who murdered six gay men has been executed.

Gary Ray Bowles, 57, died from lethal injection at 10.58pm (local time) at Florida State Prison, after being sentenced to death for just one of the six killings.

He confessed to killing six men, but was tried, convicted and sentenced for only one of them - that of Walter Hinton, who was killed in Jacksonville Beach, Florida.

He was the last of the six murders, carried out in a gruesome eight-month period across Florida, Georgia and Maryland.

Bowles met his victims in bars and, in each case, the victims were found with objects shoved down their throats.

These included a sex toy, toilet paper and a towel, prosecutors said.

The monster has become the 99th person to be executed in Florida, US, since 1979.

He was pronounced dead at 10.58pm (local time), Fox 35 reports.

Bowles opted to eat cheeseburgers, french fries and bacon before his execution.

In Florida, last meals for prisoners cannot cost more than $40 (£32).

Bernie de la Rionda, the former state prosecutor, said: "Gary Ray Bowles, the murders he committed, it seemed as if he took pleasure or enjoyed the brutality of it.

"The victims were badly beaten and strangled, and then he would have what we call a signature card. He would stuff something down their mouths.

"People were terrified of what was going on. He was wanted. He was on 'America's Most Wanted' and on the FBI's top 10."

Florida reinstated the death penalty in 1976.

The first execution since this law change didn't happen until May 1979.

But in the 40 years since, public protest over executions has quietened considerably.
