Garth Crooks snubs Mohamed Salah again and aims Real Madrid jibe at Liverpool

The last 12 months have been a bewildering time for most people.

Liverpool supporters, though, were continually perplexed by one thing in particular throughout the calendar year.

Garth Crooks' team of the week.

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker, now a pundit for the BBC, has regularly prompted head-scratching and outright befuddlement with not just some of his selections, but also the explanation for them.

Like everyone, he has his favourites. They just often don't happen to come from Anfield.

Crooks admitted barely a fortnight ago he was not Jurgen Klopp's biggest fan and has previously been critical of Mohamed Salah.

Indeed, until the Egyptian scored his wonder goal against Manchester City in October, Crooks hadn't been happy with him at all.

"Regular readers will know that I have had my issues with Salah when I thought he was chasing the golden boot award the moment the first ball of the season was kicked," he said. "Not anymore. Great to you have you back, Mo."

Not great enough, though, for inclusion in Crooks' team of the year for 2021, having also missed out in 2020.

Despite scoring 37 goals and providing 14 assists in 53 appearances in all competitions - with 24 goals coming in 41 games in the Premier League - the Liverpool forward has been overlooked in favour of Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka.

Now, Saka has had an excellent 12 months and, at 20 years old, is likely to become one of the most vibrant attackers in English football in the coming years.

But to suggest the England man has been more impressive over the year than Salah is something even Saka himself would struggle to justify.

Of course, such lists are entirely subjective. As a former player who made almost 500 senior appearances and scored in an FA Cup final - as well as netting the goal that earned Tottenham a first win at Anfield in 73 years in 1985 - Crooks is a lot more qualified than most to determine what makes a good footballer.

Yet while hardly high on the list of individual honours, the oversight from Crooks is another example of how, outside of Anfield, Salah isn't perhaps appreciated as much as his talent merits.

There is, though, one Liverpool player in Crooks' annual selection. But even that led to a few barbs in the direction of the Reds.

"Liverpool conceded eight goals in four games during February and March 2020, but that didn't stop them winning the title or Trent Alexander-Arnold getting into my team of the year," said the 63-year-old, with bafflingly zero relevance to his current team.

He continues: "The England full-back also became the focus of the ridiculous argument as to whether he is good enough for England's starting line-up or not. Well there's no doubt about that as far as I am concerned."

Fair enough. However, any goodwill with Liverpool fans is swiftly lost with the assertion "this kid is good enough to play for Real Madrid, never mind Liverpool".

A backhanded compliment and a dig all wrapped in a supposed few sentences of praise. Crooks may not be to everyone's taste, but he's certainly consistent. Never change, Garth.
