Garth Crooks picks between Trent Alexander-Arnold and Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Garth Crooks has heaped praise on Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold - but says there isn't a better defender in the country than Manchester United's Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Fans of both clubs regularly argue who is the better player with Liverpool supporters pointing out Champions League winner Alexander-Arnold has created six goals in the Premier League this season - the third best of any player in the division.

Manchester United supporters argue that while Wan-Bissaka doesn't offer the same as the Reds right-back going forward, he has made 62 tackles in the top flight this season - again, the third best of any player in the Premier League.

BBC pundit Crooks, who is known for his often interesting take on all things football, has picked his favourite between Alexander-Arnold and Wan-Bissaka, and has plumped for the Man United full-back.

"I've been banging on about Aaron Wan-Bissaka for nearly two years now," said Crooks in his BBC team of the week column.

"I saw him play for Crystal Palace against Fulham at Craven Cottage, and Roy Hodgson didn't want to talk about the player after the game for fear of attracting too much attention to the lad.

"I also said he was a Manchester United player if ever I saw one. His defending in the Manchester derby was nothing short of outstanding.

"Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold might be better on the ball but there isn't a better defender in the country on his day than Wan-Bissaka."

Former Red Devils midfielder Darren Fletcher recently revealed what current Manchester United players have been saying about Wan-Bissaka, and what he is like in training.

Fletcher told Norway's TV2: "I was talking to some Manchester United players, and they were saying that no player has managed to pass Wan-Bissaka in training this season.

"It's as if he refuses to let them pass. He has to get better technically, but he is a fantastic full-back. When he gets better technically, he's going to take his game to a new level.

"He is a fantastic defensive player and contributor for Manchester United."
