Garth Crooks explains why he wasn't surprised at Manchester City fans' frustration vs Bournemouth

Garth Crooks believes that Manchester City fans were right to be frustrated with the use of VAR after David Silva was denied what seemed to be a clear cut penalty against Bournemouth.

The Spaniard made his 400th appearance against the Cherries and dazzled the crowd at the Vitality Stadium with a trademark performance - picking up two assists against Eddie Howe's men.

Silva felt that he should have been awarded a penalty after weaving through a host of Bournemouth defenders before falling to the ground after contact from Jefferson Lerma.

Referee Andre Marriner said no penalty and the subsequent VAR check decided to uphold his initial decision, leaving Pep Guardiola furious on the touchline.

In the immediate aftermath, City fans took to social media to express their frustrations at the use of the technology and Crooks believes they are right to be angry.

"Referee Andre Marriner had an impeded view for a clear and obvious penalty on Silva by Jefferson Lerma," he wrote in his BBC Team of the Week column. "The referee cannot give what he cannot see but I thought that was why we had the video assistant referee.

"Does this scientific 'know it all' only give what the rest of us cannot see and find mystifying?

"Manchester City fans expressed their complete and utter frustration with the science. I wasn't surprised."
