Gartcairn’s 5-2 Scottish Junior Cup win over Tayport is the perfect preparation for facing free-scoring Cambuslang Rangers tonight (Wednesday), according to assistant Scott Mills.
The Airdrie club progressed in style from the second round, with a Ross McNeil hat-trick added to by strikes from David Sinclair and Eddie Ferns, setting up a third-round tie at home to Beith at the end of October.
Mills hopes they can shock the West of Scotland League Conference B leaders and half the six-point deficit, though they have played one game more than Rangers.
He said: “It was a great result and a good performance to go with it, so we’re really happy.
“It was a great start, we got a goal 60 seconds in and we never looked back, to be honest.

“We knew it was coming, and we were rewarded. The boys have been training well, working hard, it’s a good atmosphere, and we’re starting to get settled as a group, so we’re delighted.
“To to get it on the day, and to get the five goals, was really good.
“We’ve got a really big game on Wednesday night, so it couldn’t have been better preparation for that game.
“We want games thick and fast, and we’ve got a chance to claw back some points on Wednesday night.
“It’s a good opportunity for us to maybe move up a position or two, and if we can do the business on Wednesday the game [at home to Renfrew] on Saturday gives us a chance to consolidate, so we’re looking forward to the next few days.
“The boys are playing with confidence and we’re buzzing.”
