Gartcairn No.2 delighted to sink old club Ashfield as he reveals injury crisis for cup clash

Scott Mills got one over on his old club as Gartcairn beat Ashfield 4-2 to move third in the West of Scotland Conference B table.

Goals from Owen Ronald and Josh Gracie either side of a Ross McNeil penalty double saw the points head back to Lanarkshire, stretching Cairn’s winning run to six in all competitions for Willie Kinniburgh's side.

Assistant boss Mills said: “It was really good, I was really happy.

“On a personal note, I was at Ashfield before I came to Gartcairn, so I was a wee bit wary going back, so it was nice to get a wee nice return.

“We played really well on the day, it was a totally different game of football from the last couple, because it was probably one of the first really poor weather days we’ve had.

Gartcairn assistant Scott Mills (Andy McGilvray)

“With their park being really tight and compact it made it a really scrappy game, which is a different side that we have to show, but we did that.

“It was pleasing, because Ashfield scored after two minutes.

“We were thinking it wasn’t the best of starts, we had to get ourselves back in the game, and we did that quite well.

“I thought Ross McNeil up front was absolutely tremendous.

“I was really happy with the overall display.”

Gartcairn travel to Bo’ness Athletic in the South of Scotland Challenge Cup on Friday night, and may need to call up some under-20s to help with an injury crisis.

Mills said: “We’re missing new signing Ryan Bennett through injury, Anton McDowall and Jordan Love are both out, so we’re kind of struggling.

Gartcairn manager Willie Kinniburgh (David Rankin)

“We’ve brought in an experienced player in Graham Watson to help us out through this time with his experience and value.

“A couple of 20s may need to come up on Friday night, but we’re not sure yet.”
