Gartcairn No.2 delighted to see stand-in coaches do the business against Thorniewood

Gartcairn No.2 Scott Mills was delighted to see the side climb up the Conference B table in the absence of both himself and manager Willie Kinniburgh.

Coaches John McGowan and John Petrie took the team for their West of Scotland League clash at Thorniewood United on Saturday and the duo guided ‘Cairn to an impressive 4-2 victory, to take them up to fifth in the standings.

And Mills said: “Willie and I couldn’t make it to the game on Saturday, but the report from the coaches was really positive.

“They were buzzing with the performance and really happy with the way the players worked for each other.

“Even though we conceded two goals, they were really happy with how we defended, as one was a penalty and the other a scramble from a corner.

“It pushes us up the table and gives us the opportunity to put a wee run together now.”

A trip to Ardeer Thistle - who lost 9-0 in the South Challenge Cup to Kilbirnie at the weekend - now awaits.

Cairn are eight points adrift of leaders St Cadoc’s and can close the gap on third place Thistle to three points with a win on Saturday.

Mills added: “Ardeer took a wee bit of a sore one against Kilbirnie.

“With the results they’ve had this season, I don’t think many people expected that.

“They’ll feel they have a point to prove, so we need to be ready for that.”
