Gartcairn hot-shot expects Port Glasgow battle after hitting Royal Albert for six

Striker Ross McNeil bagged a hat-trick as Gartcairn hammered Royal Albert 6-1 on Saturday, but still expects a battle against Port Glasgow this weekend.

McNeil added to his tally, alongside strikes from Liam Craig, David Sinclair and Barry Eley, as they put the West of Scotland League Conference B basement side to the sword.

But though Port are five places below the Airdrie club in eighth place, McNeil reckons Saturday’s clash will be tough.

The captain said: “It was a good win, the boys are flying just now.

“I know we lost to Bo’ness and Glenafton beat us, but the boys have been going well and it’s just trying to win as many games as we can and see where it takes us.

“We have good players in the changing room, who have played at higher levels, and we have a good calibre of player.

“We beat Beith in the Scottish Junior Cup and in the Glenafton game I don’t think they could have argued if we had beat them.”

McNeil hopes that continues on Saturday when Glencairn visit the Port Glasgow Community Stadium.

He said: “It will be a battle. The last time we played there it was a 4-4 draw and it was a bit chaotic.

“They scored in the last minute and all ran off celebrating, but then we ran up the park, got a penalty and a draw out of it, so it will be a battle, no doubt about that.

“We go into it with a lot of confidence, we’re playing well and creating chances, but will be under no illusions that it will be a tough game.”
