Gartcairn boss West of Scotland League dream to join Airdrie and Albion Rovers in the SPFL

Boss Willie Kinniburgh wants Gartcairn to become the latest senior club in Monklands as the new ‘tier six’ proposals take a step forward.

Members from the Lowland, East of Scotland and South of Scotland Leagues met with West Region Juniors leaders via conference call last week.

A number of agreements were made over the formation of the additional structure to the sixth tier, to be arranged in a conference style.

Cairn have put themselves forward for the move and gaffer Kinniburgh has high hopes for the future at MTC Park.

“It’s my personal view that this is a must for the club and all junior clubs really.

“If you don’t take the chance now you could end up left behind and you’ll live to regret it.

“For the long-term good of the club it’s a good move.”

He added: “There is no point in doing this whole change if you don’t have any ambition to be a league club; you want to reach the Lowland League and League Two.

“I’m all for it and I don’t see the point in clubs stagnating in the junior game.

“It depends on where we are put in, and what conference, but in a couple of years you don’t want to be looking back and regretting your decision.”

With the junior campaign on hold, Kinniburgh reckons the West Region Championship season could be scrapped for the new model to be put in place.

This would mean the Airdrie outfit miss out on their first ever cup final, having been scheduled to face Auchinleck Talbot in the Champions Cup.

Kinniburgh said: “It’s tough for everyone in all walks of life just now, not just us, but it’s going to be disappointing if we do miss out on the cup final.

“We have got to concentrate on public safety and the season could be over, realistically.

“We have players contracted until June so hopefully we can get the final in before then.”
