Garry Monk issues warning to Swansea City ahead of South Wales derby clash with Cardiff City

Ex-Swansea City boss Garry Monk has issued a friendly warning to his former side ahead of Sunday's mouthwatering South Wales derby clash with Cardiff City.

Monk was in the dugout the last time the two teams met, his first game as Swans boss, as his side routed their bitter rivals 3-0.

It is set to be a huge clash at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday and Monk has a word of caution for Steve Cooper.

"The key is not to lose your home games," the Sheffield Wednesday boss said.

"In those battles, you can maybe lose one away, it's still bitter to take, but you definitely can't lose at home.

"It'll be an interesting watch to say the least."

Monk never lost a game to Cardiff in his playing days and believes the South Wales derby is one of the best around.

"They are great games," he added. "Brilliant.

"I loved every moment of it when I was there.

"You need the rivalries in football and it's a tasty one, it's right up there. I loved every moment of it."

There are few better ways to endear yourself to Swans fans than to win your first match in charge, let alone a derby match.

However Monk had already earned the love of the Liberty Stadium faithful owing to his longevity as a player at the club.

His time as a Swansea player means he will always have an affiliation to the club and firmly nailed his colours to the mast ahead of Sunday's clash.

"The rivalry is there and I'll be a Swansea fan for that day and forever," he added, "but everyone knows that.

"But, yeah, the key is not to lose your home game."
