Garrett Morris: A Hollywood Ride Filled with Triumphs and Challenges

Garrett Morris is a Hollywood icon who has left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry. From his groundbreaking role as one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live to his memorable performances in popular television shows, Morris's career has been filled with both triumphs and challenges. As he recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on his 87th birthday, we take a closer look at the influential journey of this remarkable actor.

In 1975, Morris made history when he became the first-ever Black cast member of Saturday Night Live. Initially hired as a writer, Morris faced resistance from some producers who were hesitant about having a Black cast member. However, creator Lorne Michaels recognized the importance of diversity and inclusion and fought for Morris's inclusion on the show.

'I dealt with some racism there, but never with Lorne. He doesn't have a racist bone in his body,' Morris reflects on his SNL experience. Despite the challenges he faced, Morris's talent and comedic prowess shone through, making him a beloved member of the SNL family.

During his five-year tenure on SNL, Morris also battled a severe cocaine addiction, a struggle he shared with his late co-star, John Belushi. Morris admits that his addiction affected his introverted nature, often leading him to avoid the post-show celebrations and retreat home. Eventually, Morris sought help and got sober, a journey that began with his participation in Alcoholics Anonymous and the support of a dedicated sponsor. Fully sober for the past decade, Morris is grateful for the newfound clarity that has come with his recovery.

Morris's talent extended beyond SNL, as he went on to play notable roles in various television shows such as The Jeffersons, Martin, The Jamie Foxx Show, and 2 Broke Girls. However, his path was not without its hurdles. Throughout his career, Morris encountered racism and discrimination, although perhaps not as overt as the segregation he experienced growing up in New Orleans. He recalls instances when he and other Black performers were denied accommodations in the same hotels as their White counterparts, facing the harsh reality of racial inequality.

'I thought Hollywood would be all progressives,' Morris admits, reflecting on his initial naivety. He encountered 'hidden' racism, an unexpected disappointment in an industry he believed would be more inclusive. Despite these challenges, Morris persevered and continued to thrive in his craft, leaving an indomitable impression on the entertainment world.

In addition to racism and addiction, Morris has faced other adversities during his career. In 1994, he survived a gunshot wound during an attempted robbery. The incident left him injured, but his spirit remained unbroken. Morris's resilience allowed him to recover and continue pursuing his passion, proving his unwavering dedication to his craft.

At 87 years old, Morris's journey in Hollywood is far from over. He eagerly anticipates the upcoming film 1975, a Saturday Night Live production directed by Jason Reitman, which will showcase a young Garrett played by Lamorne Morris (no relation). With his infectious sense of humor, Morris jokingly suggested that acclaimed actor Michael B. Jordan could portray him before the casting news was announced.

Looking back on his five-decade-long career, Morris expresses gratitude for all the experiences that have shaped him. Currently working on his autobiography, he hopes to reveal even more about his remarkable journey and leave a lasting legacy for future generations to appreciate.

Garrett Morris's story is one of resilience, talent, and the pursuit of breaking barriers in Hollywood. Despite the challenges he has faced, he continues to inspire through his artistry and unwavering determination. As we celebrate his achievements, we eagerly await the release of his autobiography, which promises to bring us closer to the full story of this incredible entertainer.
