Garner, Johnson, Grabban - Nottingham Forest's strongest XI under Steve Cooper

After only a couple of weeks in the job, Steve Cooper is still getting to know his Nottingham Forest players.

But he has already hit upon a system which seems to get the best out of them, having overseen a remarkable turnaround in form during his three games in charge.

Moreover, does he already know his best starting XI?

The international break will be used to take a closer look at his squad, especially those who have yet to feature under the new boss.

Players who have been on the fringes face a fight to get into the team, though, given the way the Reds have been playing.

Previous boss Chris Hughton’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation has been swapped for something more akin to 3-4-3 - a change which started with caretaker Steven Reid at Huddersfield Town.

Although Forest are still capable of switching to a four-man defence - a tweak which proved effective at Barnsley - three at the back has been working really well.

They have defenders who are comfortable on the ball and who are being encouraged to bring it forward, and wing-backs with the athleticism to get up and down the pitch, to fulfil both attacking and defensive duties.

Crucially, Cooper’s tactics are reaping rewards up front. The attacking players are beginning to shine and the goals have been racking up.

Going forward, the Reds have a fair few options. The head coach has shown he isn’t afraid to try something a bit different - starting without a recognised striker at Oakwell.

It is difficult to see how he can leave out Lewis Grabban now, though, other than for fitness or injury reasons, given he has been in red-hot form of late.

As for the support around him, club record signing Joao Carvalho hasn’t even been able to get a look-in yet. That is no small part down to the performances of the likes of Brennan Johnson, Philip Zinckernagel and Joe Lolley, with Alex Mighten having also impressed whenever he has played.

When it comes to picking Forest’s strongest XI, perhaps the biggest dilemma is in midfield.

Cooper will be as aware as anyone of what James Garner can do, having worked with him in the England youth set-up.

The Manchester United loanee has found it tough to get going so far, though.

On his day, there’s no question he would be one of the first names on the team-sheet. On current form, however, has Jack Colback moved ahead of him after making the most of his opportunity in the last two games?

Summer signing Braian Ojeda will hope to force his way into the reckoning at some point, though; as will fellow recent arrivals Mohamed Drager, Rodrigo Ely and Xande Silva in their own particular positions.

Forest’s strongest XI when everyone is fit (3-4-3): Samba; Worrall, Figueiredo, McKenna; Spence, Yates, Garner, Lowe; Johnson, Grabban, Zinckernagel.
