West Yorkshire Fire service have issued a statement following a huge fire at a yard in Garforth that sent thick black smoke billowing over the town.

The fire broke out at a yard behind Garforth Used Car Sales, in Wakefield Road, when tyres, trees, debris and a truck all caught fire, yesterday evening (September 16).

Crowds of people were pictured gathering on Garforth Rec to watch the blaze as it raged on.

But firefighters were quickly on hand to bring it under control.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue service confirmed four fire engines attended a scrapyard (or) garage type premises in Wakefield Road, Garforth yesterday evening.

The service Control Room received a call shortly before 7.30pm reporting a fire.

"The fire involved some conifer trees and spread to a truck," the service said.

"One fire engine attended from Garforth Fire Station, two from Killingbeck, and one from Rothwell."

John Littler, who owns the yard behind Garforth Used Car Sales, where the fire broke out, said in the past they have had 'lots of trouble with kids lighting fires and setting fireworks off'.

However he claims nothing has ever been done about it. He said: "It tends to happen more when the nights get a bit darker.

"I heard a bang, and then heard fireworks, then we realised it was on fire."
