Garett Bolles is still Broncos’ left tackle for ‘right now’

After strugglingly mightily against the Bears in Week 2, Broncos left tackle Garett Bolles had a good stretch of games without any holding penalties. Everything went south against the Chiefs in Week 7, though, and Bolles has now had four holding penalties called against him accepted this season.

Dating back to 2017, teams have accepted holding calls on Bolles 18 times. After a 30-6 loss to Kansas City, Denver coach Vic Fangio was asked what’s going wrong with the team’s left tackle.

“Some of it is poor technique,” Fangio said. “I think [that’s] the biggest culprit in his operation. We’ve got to do a good job of getting that taught to him in such a way that it sticks and that he can consistently do it on a week in and week out basis.”

Fangio was then asked if Bolles will remain the starter.

“He is right now, yes,” Fangio said.

That “right now” could be bad news for Bolles down the road. If the left tackle continues to struggle, the Broncos might consider other options.

Once right tackle Ja’Wuan James returns, Denver could move Elijah Wilkinson over to left tackle. Moving guard Dalton Risner could be another option. For now, though, Bolles will keep his starting job.
