Gareth Thomas apologises for making joke after Joe Marler grabbed Alun Wyn Jones by the testicles

Former Wales captain Gareth Thomas has apologised for his comments about the incident that saw Joe Marler grab Alun Wyn Jones by the testicles.

Early on in the match, during a melee, the England tight-head was caught by TV cameras grabbing the current Wales skipper between the legs.

A look of incredulity was etched across Jones' face as he did well not to react.

The incident was missed by all officials, including the TMO.

At half time, whilst working as part of ITV's punditry team, the openly gay Thomas said: “It would never have happened during my day and I’m really upset about that. If it had I would never have retired."

Thomas' comments received a mixed reaction as some saw the funny side but others took a dim view of his attempts to make light of the situation.

On Sunday, Thomas apologised, insisting he does not condone what Marler did.

"To the VERY small minority of people who were offended by my comment yesterday I apologise," Thomas tweeted.

"I tried to find humour in a situation - that doesn’t mean I condone it, it means I wanted it to not be an issue.

"So don’t change the narrative to justify how you feel. Be kind."

The message on social media was greeted with widespread support for the 100-cap former captain.

After the match, Wales lock Jones called on World Rugby to take action against Marler. England boss Eddie Jones refused to comment on the incident.

Marler is facing a lengthy ban for the incident - which carries a low-end entry point of 12 weeks.
