Gareth Southgate urged to consider John Stones for England after Man City star's 'soul searching'

Jermaine Jenas has urged Gareth Southgate to consider John Stones for England again after his Manchester City form.

The defender has dropped off the international radar after he became effectively sixth-choice centre-back for City last season due to injuries and poor form.

Yet he has been reinvigorated this season, making 10 appearances in all competition and forming a solid partnership at the back with Ruben Dias.

Stones played all 90 minutes to help City to a vital clean sheet in Saturday's 1-0 win over Southampton, being picked over usual first-choice Aymeric Laporte.

Pep Guardiola on the resurgence of John Stones at Man City

Match of the Day pundit Jenas has been impressed with how Stones has bounced back from his struggles of recent seasons and says it is time for Southgate to once again run the rule over the 26-year-old ahead of the Euros at the end of the season.

He said: "I think John Stones will have done a lot of soul searching over the last year or so, looking at himself to think why is he not playing in this great team.

"I know for a fact that he has had a look at himself, been in the gym more and working harder in training. He has obviously impressed Pep Guardiola to the point where he has gone ‘you know what, I’m going to play you ahead of Aymeric Laporte,’ who we thought was going to be a mainstay in the team.

"His performances have been exemplary, I think, in those four games where they have kept clean sheets and he set the tone today. Alan Shearer mentioned the lack of killer instinct at the top end of the pitch. When that happens, you need to be able to fall back on your defence to relieve that pressure.

"In this type of form, John Stones is a player that Gareth Southgate has to have another look at. He was intelligent today."
