Gareth Southgate sparks debate with England fans over his future after World Cup exit

Has there ever been a more Marmite England manager? Fans and pundits alike were quick to have their say on Gareth Southgate’s future following Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to France.

There are two camps: Southgate must stay, we are lucky to have him. And Southgate must go, he is a serial under-achiever.

The lovers and haters can both throw out well-worn arguments.

The Southgate critics point to a talented squad which has failed whenever they have come up against anyone decent, a talented group of players shackled by their manager’s conservative instincts and the repeated failure to react to in-game problems.

But those who believe Southgate is deserving of another major tournament, argue that this is our most successful period for more than 50 years, blaming bad luck rather than bad coaching for England’s exit at the hands of the world champions.

But what is your take?

Should Southgate be allowed more time at the helm or is it time for a change? And if so, who would be the perfect replacement?
