Gareth Southgate singles out Jordan Pickford moment after England draw vs Scotland

Gareth Southgate has hailed Jordan Pickford’s performance after England drew 0-0 with Scotland in their second Euro 2020 group game on Friday night.

John Stones hit the post for the Three Lions earlier on, while the Everton shot-stopper produced a great save to deny Stephen O’Donnell and Reece James headed off the line in a closely-fought game.

Having seen his status as England number one called into question following a couple of high-profile mistakes last season, Pickford finished the season strongly and has taken that form into the European Championships.

And having been a hero for the Three Lions at the both the 2018 World Cup and the 2019 UEFA Nations League, making headlines with penalty shoot-out heroics, Southgate paid tribute to his first-choice’s performance between the sticks against the Scots.

“His performance was excellent,” he told reporters. “He has always played well for us and tonight was no exception.

“(He made) a very important, not straightforward save in the first half in particular. The ball was skidding around off the surface and several situations where there was a big crowd scene in the box, he came and punched with authority.

“I thought he had an excellent performance.”
