Gareth Southgate set tactics challenge for crunch Euro 2020 Germany clash

Jamie Redknapp has challenged Gareth Southgate to loosen the shackles and play with more flair in England's last 16 clash against Germany at Euro 2020.

The Three Lions will square off against their rivals in the European Championships for the first time in 21 years.

England topped Group D but were largely unconvincing in the process, scoring just twice and failing to breakdown Scotland at Wembley.

Southgate is blessed with a host of young attacking stars, but is yet to unlock their potential amid claims his system is too defensive.

Germany are far from their best as they go through something of a transitional period ahead of Joachim Low's departure.

That said, they have shown ambition in attack thus far and Redknapp wants England to follow suit or face living with a sense of what might've been.

He told Sky Sports : "He has got to get the right formula, pick the right players and get a bit more flair and excitement into the side.

"What you do not want to do is go out of this tournament having only scored two goals considering we have got such an exciting group of players.

"Given we have got such a young and talented squad, what you do not want to do is reflect on playing with the handbrake on and with a little bit of fear.

"That is not what anyone wants to see. When Jack Grealish came off against the Czech Republic, there was a collective sigh inside the stadium. Let's have a go.

"No matter what happens now, let's have a go. Let's go out swinging punches rather than playing too safe. Let's go and show what we are capable of and give the team the opportunity to go and prove that."

Germany have conceded five times in their three games so far with Mats Hummels' lack of pace a serious weakness at the back.

That may only add to the clamour for Jadon Sancho to start.

The Borussia Dortmund star, who is club team-mates with Hummels, was given a brief cameo in England's final group game, but that is all thus far.

His creative flair was clear for all to see in the Bundesliga this term but he is yet to be given a genuine opportunity this summer.

Southgate will also be sweating on whether Mason Mount features next week with the Chelsea star currently in self-isolation after coming into contact with Scotland's Billy Gilmour.
