Gareth Southgate sends clear Bukayo Saka message as Arsenal star handed new England role

Bukayo Saka has been called up to play for England over the coming international break.

The 19-year-old will join up with Gareth Southgate's squad for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino, Albania and Poland.

It is the third time the Arsenal youngster has been called up to the Three Lions' senior side this season after making his debut against Wales in October, before going on to feature in all three of the matches over the last break in November.

However, there is a slight difference to the way Saka has been called up this time that highlights how important a role he has to play in the England set up going forward.

In his previous four caps for his country, the Hale End graduate has been played as a wing back despite naturally being a winger.

This is as a result of the versatility that saw him break into the Arsenal side as a left back before the COVID pandemic brought the footballing world to a halt last year.

As a result Saka was down on the England squad list as a defender.

However, since the festive period the 19-year-old - who spent much of this season as a left wing back in Mikel Arteta's 3-4-3 system - has been moved over to the right wing.

The positional change has seen him step up his game to another level, scoring five goals and assisting five more since the Gunners' 3-1 win over Chelsea on Boxing Day.

It's a testament to how well he has played in the role that he has now been listed as a forward in Gareth Southgate's squad rather than as a member of the back line.

Considering the competition from the likes of Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and many others this is an incredible feat for the youngster.

Despite his England call up Saka is unlikely to start for Arsenal when they take on Olympiacos on Thursday evening though due to a hamstring injury he picked up in the North London Derby victory over Spurs at the weekend.

Speaking ahead of the Europa League clash Mikel Arteta admitted that the injury was not as serious as first thought, but that the versatile winger faced a race against time to be available for the game.

"He was having another test. He felt something muscular," said the Gunners boss on Wednesday afternoon.

"He’s been doing much, much better and evolving really well so we will make the decision this afternoon on what we will do."
