Gareth Southgate's comments show truth about Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin's England call-up

Dominic Calvert-Lewin's first ever senior England call-up finally arrived on Thursday afternoon.

It was a long overdue and emotional moment for a player who has richly deserved national recognition for the often thankless work he has demonstrated at Goodison Park over recent years.

Of course, what has taken the limelight over the beginning of this campaign has been his goals, and quite rightly so to a certain extent.

The striker is the Premier League's joint top scorer with five goals from three games, level with Leicester City's Jamie Vardy in those particular standings.

In all competitions, he took his tally to a hugely impressive eight strikes in five appearances with a hat trick against West Ham United on Wednesday evening at Goodison Park.

The fact that the 23-year-old has scored in all but one of his games across 2020/21 so far shows the evolution of the young forward under the tutelage of Ancelotti.

Much has been made of the manager's teachings towards Calvert-Lewin over the past few months, in particular comments surrounding one-touch finishes and making sure he is in the right place at the right time.

So for many across the country, not just Evertonians, it was hardly a surprise to see the Blues star's name in Gareth Southgate's latest squad list. After all, he's been banging in the goals, right?

But, comments from the Three Lions manager prove that it's much more than that.

This isn't a knee-jerk reaction to a player who's just started a season well, this call-up is a long time in the making for Calvert-Lewin.

Southgate told his press conference: "I think with pretty much all of the squad we've looked at not just what they've done this season, but also quite a big emphasis on the end of last season as well.

"Dominic's a player that we've liked his all-round game for a long time, what he's added over the last 18 months is goals. Of course, for a striker, that's critical.

"He's in a really rich vein of form, his all-round game in terms of what he gives to the team - his hold up play, his ability to press the opposition - he's a pest to play against for defenders.

"That adds a lot to the team and he's clearly been a big part of why Everton have started the season so well. He thoroughly deserves his opportunity."

What's key there is Southgate's comments about Calvert-Lewin's all-round game, aside from just the goals.

Around this point last year, the striker had just shown the first snippet of the instinct which has served him so well at the start of this season - diving in to nod home a goal-bound Seamus Coleman effort at home to Manchester City.

Before then, many had a certain view of the young forward. He was someone who would work extremely hard for the team, but did he have that cutting edge in front of goal?

Even following lockdown last season a few doubts started to creep in once more. Had Calvert-Lewin just experienced a temporary surge in form under Duncan Ferguson and Ancelotti?

The opening to this term has certainly proven that wrong, but the goals do not solely define the Everton man.

His work in terms of winning headers has improved drastically over the past few seasons. His hold-up play is getting stronger and stronger as the games go by.

He still links up play at the top end of the pitch, he works tirelessly to chase down centre-backs off the ball in a bid to win possession back and close in on goal once again.

His pace is underrated, his awareness of those around him is great and is still improving.

These are all qualities that were on display before the goals started to flow, but now he has a more complete package to offer to Southgate.

This call-up isn't just a reward for eight goals in five appearances at the start of this season. This is a recognition of years of hard work finally paying off for Calvert-Lewin.

And Evertonians couldn't be more delighted to see it happen for their No. 9.
