Gareth Southgate reveals why Tottenham's Danny Rose is in England squad ahead of Luke Shaw

England boss Gareth Southgate has explained why he opted to leave Manchester United’s Luke Shaw out of his 27-man squad for the UEFA Nations League finals.

The Three Lions managed called upon Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose and Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell over United’s Player of the Year, who has been left out in the cold.

While the selection may have raised eyebrows for some, Southgate has admitted it wasn’t a decision that left him with sleepless nights.

"We are blessed with so much talent in that department. Both Chilwell and Rose have been committed for England,” Southgate said.

When asked if it was a tough choice, Southgate said: "No. Ben Chilwell and Danny Rose have been excellent for us so they are ahead in the pecking order. But it gives us a lot of good options."

Rose has been a mainstay in recent England squads, accumulating 26 caps, while Chilwell is seen as the long-term choice for the role down the left side of England’s defence.

The Tottenham man is one of six from N17 in the training squad, with Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Kieran Trippier and Harry Winks also included.
