Gareth Southgate reveals why Newcastle's Karl Darlow missed out on an England call-up

Karl Darlow's omission from the Newcastle United starting line-up cost him a place in the England squad - according to Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.

The former Nottingham Forest shot-stopper has been star man on many occasions for the Magpies this season, but lost his place after an error in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Darlow was under consideration for games against San Marino, Albania and Poland in England's World Cup qualifiers.

Aston Villa's Sam Johnstone, Man United's Dean Henderson and Burnley's Nick Pope got the nod with Everton's Jordan Pickford injured.

Southgate said: "Karl Darlow has had a very good season for Newcastle.

"He's probably found himself out of the team at just the wrong time in many regards really.

"But Sam Johnstone, in a team that has had a difficult season, has kept a very good level of performance.

"He's comfortable in possession as well as keeping the ball out of his net."

Darlow has previously snubbed Wales in favour of eventually playing for England.
