There were a couple of surprise inclusions in the England squad when Gareth Southgate announced it for the Euro 2020 qualifying wins over Bulgaria and Kosovo.
Everton's Michael Keane was given the nod, as was Aston Villa's Tyrone Mings.
Mason Mount earned his first call-up to the senior side, following a terrific start to life as a Premier League footballer with Chelsea, but it was the exclusion of one of his teammates that raised a few eyebrows.
Tammy Abraham has netted four goals in the Premier League already this season, one fewer than Raheem Sterling and two fewer than Sergio Aguero.
And there is a battle over which nation he will represent at senior level.
The 21-year-old has already played for England at U18, U19 and U21 levels, and made two appearances for the senior team in friendly matches against Germany and Brazil in 2017.
But he is wanted by Nigeria, for whom he is eligible to represent through his father, who is Nigerian.
If England want him, Southgate will have to act fast, and he has explained why the Chelsea frontman did not receive the call on this occasion.
He said: "I think with Tammy, he’s a young player that we’ve always liked, we know he’ll score goals.
"We felt [that it was a] bit early this time, but we really can see that he can offer us something moving forward. We obviously gave him a cap back in November of 2017.
"So, for sure, we need to make certain that he feels that the opportunity is going to be there. I’m pretty sure he does, he knows us well enough."
