Gareth Southgate reveals conversation with Manchester United captain Harry Maguire about court case

Gareth Southgate included Manchester United captain Harry Maguire in his latest England squad after speaking to the centre back about his arrest on the Greek island of Mykonos last week.

Maguire was included in the Three Lions squad to face Iceland and Denmark in Nations League fixtures next month on the same day that his trial for alleged offences in Greek was taking place.

The 27-year-old was not required to attend the hearing in Greece having pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated assault and attempted bribery of official on Saturday.

Maguire and two others were charged over an alleged brawl on the holiday island of Mykonos last Thursday. He appeared in court on Saturday before flying home.

Despite the case hanging over him, Maguire was included in Southgate's squad for the games on September 5 and September 8, with the England manager revealing the United defender's version of events was very different to what had been reported in Greece.

"It's clearly a decision that is not straightforward and a decision I could only take on the information that I have. I've spoken with Harry. I have the insight to the story which is very different to what is being reported," said Southgate.

"You can only make decisions on facts you are aware of. If the facts or information changes further down the line, I have to review that decision. I have a fantastic relationship with the boy. Harry has been an outstanding character for us, I've no reason to doubt what he's telling me and it's important for him to now he has my support at this moment.

"Harry regrets the fact he’s brought that attention and focus on the team and he apologised for that, but he has his own side of the story that will come out in time."
