Gareth Southgate provides Trent Alexander-Arnold injury update as he comes off for England

Gareth Southgate has admitted it wasn't a good sign to see Trent Alexander-Arnold limp off with an injury against Austria

The Liverpool right-back pulled up with a leg injury under no challenge late on in England's clash with the Austrians on Wednesday night and was forced to leave the pitch.

Alexander-Arnold is now a major doubt for the upcoming European Championships

And Southgate provided an update after the 1-0 friendly win.

The England boss conceded it didn't look good for the full-back but they'll need to assess him over the next day or so to discover the extent of the injury.

He said: “We’re going to have a little look. It’s obviously not good to see him having to come off in the way he did, but we’ll have to assess him over the next 24 hours.

“I think (it’s his) thigh, but the medical team are still assessing it.

“We’ll just have to see, it’s not a good sign to see him walk off in the way that he did, so we’ll know more in the next 24 or 48 hours.

“We don’t know the full extent, so the last thing you want is to see him come off in the way that he did.”

Bukayo Saka scored his first England goal to secure the victory.

England weren't at their fluent best but Southgate says he was pleased with the performance.

He added: "I thought we started very well, I thought we used the ball well in the first hour or so.

"We were playing against a very good team, they've got some very good players. Alaba, Sabitzer, they get in between the lines well.

"I thought the first hour was good in terms of the quality, after that we needed to make a lot of changes and preserve people.

"We were getting disjointed, a couple were getting cramp, so we were hanging on at the end.

"But that was understandable considering the changes we had to make."
