Gareth Southgate provides injury update on Manchester United's Luke Shaw

England manager Gareth Southgate has said Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw will likely miss Monday's clash with San Marino.

Shaw was pulled out of the Three Lions squad earlier this week after sustaining a head injury in the 2-0 loss to Manchester City before the international break.

The defender has been following concussion protocols since and it would now appear he will miss the team's final World Cup qualifying match.

"I think Luke and Mason [Mount] are very unlikely now," said Southgate. "I think we're going to run out of time with those two."

Shaw was one of United 's best players last season, progressing into one of the standout left-backs in the Premier League.

The former Southampton man carried that form into the European Championships in the summer, when he was one of England's best players on their way to the final of the competition.

However, this season Shaw has lacked the same zest that made him so effective last term. Indeed, in the 2-0 defeat to City last weekend, he made a shocking defensive mistake that allowed Bernardo Silva to score the second goal of the game.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may be pleased to see Shaw sit out the internationals, as it gives him the best possible chance of featuring for the Red Devils when the Premier League and Champions League returns.

England are unlikely to require Shaw's help against the minnows on Monday anyway. The 5-0 win over Albania means they need only a point to secure top spot in Group I and book their spot at Qatar 2022.
