Gareth Southgate pays classy tribute to Christian Eriksen as England cancel press conference

England manager Gareth Southgate has paid tribute to Christian Eriksen and the medical staff who helped save his life after he collapsed in Denmark's loss to Finland.

The midfielder received CPR on the pitch in Copenhagen as the match was suspended before being rushed to hospital, where it was later confirmed he was 'awake and stable'.

The match later resumed at the request of the players with Denmark falling to a 1-0 defeat in their Euro 2020 opener.

Meanwhile, Southgate and England captain Harry Kane, who played alongside Eriksen at Tottenham Hotspur, were due to face the media for their pre-match press conference on Saturday evening, ahead of Sunday's clash with Croatia.

However, with the permission of UEFA, the Three Lions' media duties were cancelled in respect of Eriksen.

And Southgate has since paid tribute to both the Dane and the medical staff on duty in Copehagen.

"We are encouraged by the update from the Danish FA this evening," he said.

“On behalf of the FA, our players and staff, we send our very best wishes to Christian and those close to him.

“We pay tribute to those who went to his aid with such care to give the support he received.

“Our thoughts remain with Christian and his family tonight.”
