Gareth Southgate makes Ruben Loftus-Cheek admission on Chelsea star's injury and England chance

England boss Gareth Southgate has singled out Ruben Loftus-Cheek as one of the potential stars to benefit from Euro 2020 being postponed.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the European competition was pushed back a year, meaning it is set to be played in the summer of 2021.

Loftus-Cheek has been a regular fixture in Southgate's squad over the past few seasons, however the Chelsea star has not played for the Blues's first team in more than a year due to a ruptured Achilles' tendon.

The midfielder is now back fit and in contention to fight for a spot in Frank Lampard's starting XI when the Premier League returns next week.

And Southgate believes the time has now given him the chance to fight for a place in England Euro squad once again, when it was looking inevitable he wouldn't have been ready for this summer.

"On moments of fate things do turn," said Southgate.

"I was talking with Ruben Loftus-Cheek a few days ago, he’s been out for a year. No way would he have got back for a tournament like that.

"Who knows what the next 12 months might look like for him and other young players who might not have played in the Premier League yet, who might emerge in certain positions to provide competition for places."
