Gareth Southgate makes England promise to Manchester United's Mason Greenwood

Gareth Southgate has promised to continue to 'closely' follow the progress of Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood, 20, has enjoyed a strong start to the new season for United, scoring a total of four goals across 12 appearances but just once since Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival.

The youngster's outstanding goal from distance against Leicester was a timely reminder of his talent, however, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has regularly named Greenwood in the Reds' starting XI, the England boss has opted to snub him once again.

Considering Greenwood's form, his omission for the England squad has been a talking point since Thursday's announcement.

Southgate was duly asked about his decision to not include Greenwood in the Three Lions squad following the news.

"I think with Mason I discussed the situation last time so we've been through that," Southgate said.

"We're constantly tracking every English player that plays. As I said he and his family felt that he needed time and with a young player especially we have to be very mindful of that. He's a player we believe has a big future, he's doing well at Manchester United.

"He's got a challenge there now with the forward line they've played in the last few games, but I'm sure that's going to change with the number of matches that they have to play.

"We'll continue to watch him really closely."
