Gareth Southgate lifts lid on talks with Manchester United manager Solskjaer after England row

Gareth Southgate says he has spoken to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to explain why Mason Greenwood was called up to the England squad last month.

The Manchester United attacker made his England debut against Iceland last month but was sent home from the squad after breaching COVID protocol with Manchester City's Phil Foden.

It means the duo are not included in the England squad announced on Thursday for the upcoming international triple-header.

Following the incident last month, United boss Solskjaer questioned why Greenwood had been included in last month's England squad in the first place.

Arguing that the young starlet needed a break following United's games in Europe in August, Solskjaer said he had requested for the 19-year-old not be called up.

Speaking during Thursday's England squad announcement, Southgate said he had cleared the air with Solskjaer following their disagreement.

"I have spoken to him," Southgate said. "I felt that was important because the best way to communicate is directly. We had a good chat last week and are on a similar page on a lot of things. We did have contact from the club regarding all their players.

"They wanted dispensation because of Europe, which was understandable. But because we had four clubs in that situation we just couldn't help that.

"We didn't get an individual request regarding Mason - but we've talked it through and want to look after the young players. We will continue to do that."
