Gareth Southgate issues Ruben Loftus-Cheek injury update ahead of Europa League final

England boss Gareth Southgate has confirmed that Ruben Loftus-Cheek was in his squad for the Nations League finals before rupturing his Achilles tendon last night.

The 23-year-old has had a superb end to the season and was set to start in the Europa League final on May 29 before looking to help his country win a trophy.

England take on the Netherlands on June 6 in the Nations League semi-final, with the final to take place three days later against either Portugal and Switzerland if they get through.

However, Loftus-Cheek's season is set to be over after he picked up the serious injury in the post-season friendly win over New England Revolution last night in Boston.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek's injury to give Chelsea a nightmare next season only Mason Mount can solve

He will miss those big matches and likely the start of the 2019/20 campaign, something that really disappoints the national head coach.

"We will find out more about a couple of players in that period and then I am going to have to make a couple of decisions, but we can change if we have injuries after that date. Frankly there is every chance that is going to happen," Southgate said.

"We have just got to make the best possible decisions really with the information that we have. It is constantly moving.

"I went to bed last night and Ruben is in the squad and playing brilliantly and now it is a huge disappointment for him. He misses now a major European final and a brilliant opportunity with us.

"In particular he has really come on in the last few months and looked strong and playing with a lot of confidence and I am really disappointed for him in particular."
