Gareth Southgate insists England fired up for 'incredible' Scotland clash as he urges stars to be ready

Gareth Southgate insists England are fired-up for Friday’s “incredible” clash with Scotland.

The Three Lions got their Euro 2020 campaign off to a perfect start as Manchester City star Raheem Sterling’s second-half strike clattered Croatia.

Southgate’s troops have early control of Group D with Steve Clarke ’s men next on their hit list at Wembley.

The English gaffer is delighted to have made a winning start to the section and says he’ll make sure his buoyant boys remain in the zone for the Battle of Britain.

He said: “Of course we are delighted with the win and the players are happy and it is a positive step in terms of qualification.

“But one of the hardest things in sport is to come back to that point you were before the kick-off for the next game.

“You can get a bit of a glow off the win and a bit soft when you poke your finger in the belly.

“We have got to make sure that we are ready for what is going to be an incredible game against Scotland and a huge challenge. We have to find that.

“We should enjoy this because I think you have to enjoy your wins, especially in tournaments.

“Our first objective is qualification and we haven’t done that yet. We have got a very important game for us and our fans on Friday night.”

Southgate was thrilled with a winning start. It was England's first victory at an opening game of a Euros at their 10th attempt.

He said: “I’m most pleased with the performance. Of course the win is important. To win the first game relieves some tension, but it doesn’t mean we’ve qualified and that’s the first objective.

“The performance was really good. It was a big occasion, a sweltering hot day and the players settled really quickly, used the ball well and we limited Croatia to very few clear chances throughout the game.

“They are a good opponent who we have huge respect for and we know so much about so I couldn’t be happier with not just the players that started but those who came in and the whole group for the way they prepared for this game.

“It relieves some tension. You know if you don’t win the first game, the pressure ramps up. But we have two really difficult games left in this group and we’re a good step forward, but important steps to go to qualify.

“This is a tough group and there are different sorts of challenges. Scotland and the Czech Republic are good sides so we are pleased.

“The players dealt with the big occasion really well. Right from the start, incredible heat, they played well and settled early in the game.

“There were moments where the tempo dropped, but the majority of the game we were in control and didn’t give Croatia many opportunities and we looked dangerous.

“Kalvin Phillips is a player who is so understated. He has had a fantastic start to his international career. I thought he was immense throughout the game and I’m so pleased for Raheem. He was dangerous all game.

“We are going to need all the attacking players through the tournament. We can make changes and we will need to.

“The key was to get pressure on Croatia’s midfield players and we managed to do that. That limited some of the supply and the defenders dealt with the longer balls well and read the game well.

“It was a day when everybody who got onto the pitch performed well and that was set up by the whole group.”
