Gareth Southgate hints at timetable for Harry Kane transfer amid Manchester United and Man City interest

England boss Gareth Southgate doesn't expect any transfer involving Three Lions captain Harry Kane to be completed until after this summer's European Championship.

Kane wants to leave Tottenham during this transfer window and Manchester United and Manchester City are interested in signing him.

But with Daniel Levy expected to drive a hard bargain with Kane still having three years remaining on his Tottenham contract, a deal for either club is going to be difficult to pull off.

Kane has admitted he needs to have a "conversation with the club" over his future this summer but with the rearranged Euro 2020 taking place Southgate expects any move to be completed once the tournament has concluded.

Southgate named a provisional 33-man squad on Tuesday, with seven players to be cut from that list in a week's time. England's warm-up games begin next Wednesday (June 2) with a game against Austria at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium, before the same venue is used for a fixture against Romania on Sunday, June 6.

With ambitions of winning a major tournament with England now top of his agenda, Southgate believes Kane's future will be on the back burner until Euro 2020 is over, making a transfer later in July more likely, if there is to be a deal.

"I don’t think I need to have a conversation with Harry Kane regarding focus or professionalism," said Southgate.

"He’s got one goal this summer whilst with us and that's to win a European Championship. I know how important that is to him at this time, what’s going on at his club is a matter for him and Tottenham.

"He’s made some statements in the last few days so in many respects that's out of the way now. I think it’s very unlikely transfer deals will be done while we’re away. I think that’s different when we have our camps in September, very often we’re on that deadline moment and every now and then we’ve had to help facilitate a medical or a meeting between a player and a manager.

"I’m very realistic about those things, we’re not going to stop phones ringing, we can’t control conversations going on in private. I think most deals are done at the end of tournaments or in the first week after the end of the season. I would expect anything across the board with our clubs to be after the tournament."
