Gareth Southgate explains why he snubbed Man Utd's Luke Shaw for England call-up

Gareth Southgate says he picked left backs Ben Chilwell and Danny Rose over Luke Shaw for England's Nations League squad because they "give everything for the shirt".

Shaw was named Manchester United's Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year last week for his consistent performances in what was a disappointing campaign for the Red Devils.

But Shaw, who has been capped just eight times at international level, misses out in place of Leicester City star Chilwell and Tottenham's Danny Rose.

"I think Ben Chilwell and Danny Rose have been excellent. At the moment they're ahead [in the pecking order] and have played particularly well," said Southgate, when justifying his decision.

The nine players have just five days to recover from the match in Madrid before England's semi-final clash with the Netherlands on June 6 in Portugal.

Surprise names included in the team are Southampton's Nathan Redmond and Spurs midfielder Harry Winks, who recently underwent groin surgery and faces a race to be fit for the tournament.
