Gareth Southgate explains his list of England penalty takers in Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy

Gareth Southgate shouldered the burden of England's penalty shoot-out defeat against Italy and admitted he made the decision not to name Jack Grealish or Raheem Sterling on his list of five takers.

Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho all missed in the spot-kick contest as Italy triumphed 3-2.

However, Southgate indicated that the list had been formulated on the basis of what happened in training.

He said: "It is down to me. I decided on the penalty-takers based on what they have done in training."

Southgate put an arm around Arsenal star Saka after his miss ended England's hopes of a summer of glory.

The former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough defender missed a penalty against Germany at Euro 96 in the semi-final but has shown you can bounce back in your career.

He said: "Nobody is on their own.

"We have won together as a team and it is on all of us together to not be able to win this game.

"In terms of penalties, it is my call and it totally rests with me."

England signed off from the tournament having reached their first final in 55 years.

Their hopes now move back to World Cup qualifying for next year's winter tournament in Qatar which takes place between November and December 2022.

Southgate said: "You cannot have any recriminations.

"They have done more than any other team in over 50 years."
