England manager Gareth Southgate says he wants more winners in his squad, as the Three Lions prepare to get their World Cup qualifying campaign underway tonight.
England begin the road to Qatar 2022 against San Marino at Wembley, with Southgate expected to rest captain Harry Kane.
Kane is among 18 members of Southgate's 26-man squad who have never won a major trophy and only four England players — Manchester City quartet John Stones, Kyle Walker, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling — have ever won the League title, a fact that is unlikely to change this season.
There remains a chance that more England internationals could finish the campaign with honours, however, particularly with Chelsea pushing in the FA Cup and Champions League.
Southgate said: "The balance of this squad is quite good in that respect, we've got some guys that have got some of those experiences.
"We'd like more that were winning. The more trophies they win, the more times they get to finals, the more times they play in those big moments, the better it is for us, because we only have a certain number of opportunities to do that internationally."
Southgate confirmed that Kane would play every minute of the World Cup qualifying triple-header given the choice, with England travelling to Albania on Sunday before hosting Poland next Wednesday, but says he will be "sensible" with the Tottenham striker's minutes.
Part-timers San Marino are the lowest-ranked team in Fifa's world standings, without a competitive win in their history, and Southgate is conscious of the need for his players to put on a show tonight.
"I think there's always that responsibility," he said. "We connect [with an] audience beyond the hardcore Premier League fans.
“We understand that, particularly when we've got exciting players. We know what those big England nights mean, we should never lose sight of that romance."
