Gareth Southgate delivers Trent Alexander-Arnold injury news as Chelsea's Reece James waits

England boss Gareth Southgate has admitted that Trent Alexander-Arnold's injury he suffered against Austria did not look good.

The Three Lions played their first European Championships warm-up match as they beat Austria 1-0 thanks to Bukayo Saka 's goal at the Riverside Stadium.

With just over 10 days until the Euros, Alexander-Arnold was forced to come off, with Chelsea defender Reece James watching on after being rested due to the Blues ' Champions League final at the weekend.

The right-back position is perhaps the most competitive role in the 26-man squad, with Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker, James and Alexander-Arnold all being selected by Southgate.

Former Tottenham defender Trippier played at left-back against Austria - which could be a sign of what the England boss is planning on doing with the Atletico Madrid star at the Euros.

James' role in the international tournament could be massively impact by the extent of Alexander-Arnold's injury, and Southgate spoke about the Liverpool defender after the 1-0 win.

“We’re going to have a little look," the England manager said to ITV Sport post-match.

"It’s obviously not good to see him having to come off in the way he did, but we’ll have to assess him over the next 24 hours.

“I think (it’s his) thigh, but the medical team are still assessing it.

“We’ll just have to see, it’s not a good sign to see him walk off in the way that he did, so we’ll know more in the next 24 or 48 hours.

“We don’t know the full extent, so the last thing you want is to see him come off in the way that he did.”

Speaking on ITV after the game, Roy Keane, Eni Aluko and Ian Wright all issued their verdict.

Keane said: “It certainly didn’t (look good), and we’re obviously quick to jump the gun and talk about how serious it might be.

"He walked past us there and he looked really uncomfortable, he was swearing quite a bit so it doesn’t look good, absolutely not, the guy looks in big trouble.”

Aluko added: “It’s so unfortunate for Trent.

"We’ve spoken so much about his journey, how he’s kept on his toes and got back in the squad, but this injury does not look good.

"I don’t know whether it’s his achilles or hamstring, it opens up a spot for someone else."

Arsenal icon Wright concluded: “My instincts, you could see even when he’s covering his face with his shirt, he, himself, probably feels like it’s not going to happen for him simply because you know instantly when you’re injured and how long it’s going to be.

"The way he kicked the ball, I’m not sure if it looked like a thigh, a hamstring, I don’t know what it could have been, but if it’s that and we’re talking about 11 days - there’s no way he’s making that.”
