Gareth Southgate admitted England need to “look at ourselves” after being booed off at Wembley.
Southgate endured a frustrating night as they were held to a stalemate by bitter rivals Scotland while Harry Kane was substituted for the second game running after drawing a blank.
England boss Southgate said: “The whole team can look at ourselves, that starts with me, we've got to be better. We didn't do enough to win the game tonight, not enough attempts on goal, we have to go away and look at that.
“Our fans are entitled to react however they want and I understand their reaction because we are expected to beat Scotland and we have to deal with that.
“We have to accept whatever comes our way, I’m manager and will accept what comes my way but we still have to get behind the players.
“I understand it’s Wembley, it’s Scotland and everyone wants us to win the game but it’s also in the context of tournament and we had to get a result to make sure we leave ourselves in a good position to qualify.”
Southgate also defended out-of-sorts Kane who was hooked after 74 minutes without registering a shot on target. TV pundit Roy Keane claimed that the Tottenham striker has been distracted by transfer talk as he wants to leave White Hart Lane.
Southgate said: “I think the whole team have got to look at the whole performance and our use of the ball and review where we can be better. That's right across the board. It's not about one person.
“Scotland marked him extremely well, with the back five there's not a lot of space. Tonight we couldn't find the answers but we go away to review the game and find those answers for the Czech Republic.
"We needed more runs in behind, I felt Marcus Rashford would give us that energy, at that point we had got to try and get the. We have to make these decisions based on what we see."
Former England defender Gary Neville blasted: “It was a really poor performance, there was massive disappointment in this ground, underpinned by poor physical levels.
"I don’t know what Gareth will be thinking about how he’ll correct that for the next game because it was really lethargic.”
