England hammered Montenegro 5-1 on Monday night as the Three Lions again showed their attacking prowess in the European Championship qualifiers.
But post-match the major talking point was the alleged racist abuse directed the way of Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose.
England boss Gareth Southgate confirmed post-match that he heard the abuse of Rose at the end of the game, while BBC Sport have reported that the left-back had been subjected to chants earlier on in the contest. Sky Sports have reported monkey chants could be heard inside the Podgorica City Stadium.
Raheem Sterling seemed to be responding to the earlier chants when he cupped his hand around his ear following his goal and England’s fifth in the 80th minute.
Rose, who made 17 appearances for the Robins in the 2010/11 Championship season, was later booked and Southgate alleges that the Montenegro fans abused the defender following his yellow card.
“I definitely heard some abuse of Danny Rose when he got booked at the end of the game,” Southgate told ITV Sport.
“There is no doubt in my mind that it happened. We’ll make sure that is reported and it’s not acceptable.”
On Sterling’s goal celebration, Southgate added: “I’m not sure yet. I had a quick chat with Danny because I heard that. I haven’t had the chance to speak to Raheem yet. Whatever has happened, we will report.
“I don’t want to speculate, but I know what I heard. We have to deal with it in the right way, though.”
